categories of interactive courseware (ICW)
There are four categories of ICW presentation:Category 1 - Low Grade Presentation. The lowest (baseline) category of ICWdevelopment. It is normally a knowledge or familiarization lesson, provided in a linearformat (one idea after another). Used for introducing an idea or concept. The user haslittle or no control over the sequence and timed events of the lesson material. Minimalinter-activity is provided. May include simple graphics. Category 2 - Medium Grade Presentation. Involves the recall of more information than aCategory 1 presentation and allows the learner more control over the lessonâs scenariothrough screen icons and other peripherals, such as light pens or touch screens. Used fornon-complex operations. Simple emulations or simulations are presented to the user.May include simple graphics and video. Category 3 - High Simulation Presentation. This category involves the recall of morecomplex information and allows the user an increased level of control over the lessonscenario through peripherals such as light pen, touch screen, track ball, or mouse.Video, graphics, or a combination of both are presented simulating the operation of asystem, subsystem, or equipment to the user. The lesson scenario training materialtypically is complex and involves more frequent use of peripherals to affect a transfer oflearning. Multiple software branches (two to three levels) and rapid response areprovided to support remediation. Emulations and simulations are an integral part of thispresentation. This category may also include complex graphics, video, and audio clips. Category 4 - Real-time Simulation Presentation. Involves more in-depth recall of alarger amount of information and allows the user an increased level of control over thelesson. Every possible subtask is analyzed and presented with full, on-screen interaction. The lesson material is extremely complex and involves more frequent use of peripheralsto affect the transfer of learning. This category normally supports certification, recertification or qualification requirements. Complicated operation and maintenanceprocedures are normally. The level of sophistication is short of artificial intelligence.
